There is an increasing clamor for calling off the war on terror from the Peacniks, Greens and
Al Quaida and other Jihadis will get an unasked for boon, since they have not sued for peace. They have not raised the White flag and never will!
A unasked for stoppage of hostilities in mid-war will be met by scorn by the Al Quaida and Jihadis and they will attack with redoubled vigor. They will view the cease fire as a sign of weakness on part of the Allies. As it is Osama Bin Laden openly calls the Americans to be cowards and the Jihadis has been daring the Americans to start a land war. With the war on terror called off, the Al Quaida and Jihadis will get a good opportunity to tell their troops that the Americans have no guts to start the land war so they have stopped the war.
If there is a stoppage of hostilities then what do the American troops do in Pakistan. Do they stay put there with the rising tide of increasingly violent demonstrations against them. The presence of the American troops is an eyesore for the Jihadis in Iraq; and with the American troops still there in large numbers, but not engaged in active combat, the danger of their being attacked by the Jihadis would b remain intact, while their presence in Pakistan would serve no purpose! In one month, the Pakistani Jihadis may storm these airfields where the American troops would be stationed but be inactive. They would be an inviting target of revenge for the Jihadis.
If the Americans pull out their troops from Pakistan to the USS Theodore Roosevelt, USS Kitty Hawk and other carriers, they would be sitting ducks for fidayeen attacks as was the USS Cole.
If the US takes its troops back to the USA, then it will be perceived as a retreat boosting the volatile but sagging morale of the Jihadis and of their supporters - the anti-American mobs everywhere.
A cease fire will give the much needed breathing space for the beleaguered Jihadis and Al Quaida to re-group and re-formulate the war strategy; now that they know fairly well how the Americans intend to attack them
Al Quaida can use this stoppage of hostilities to reach out to their contacts across the globe to effect a second round of terror attacks.
Some years back, India had declared an unilateral ceasefire in its war on terrorism in Kashmir. But this gesture was not reciprocated by terrorists and they continued their bloodletting with impunity.
Laden may use this opportunity to escape from Afghanistan into a more intractable lair in Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Chechnya or elsewhere.
Al Quaida can use the sentiment that is already keyed up in the Muslim world with all the 'faithful' assembling in the mosques, to get additional recruits for its cause of Jihad. The war on terror being called off is not going to assuage the ruffled feeling so the surcharged Muslim masses. Above all a hurt tiger, if allowed to escape by a hunter, is bound to use this opportunity to lick its wounds and use this opportunity to make a meal of the unwary hunter. Wounded tigers do not have morals - this is grandmother's wisdom. We hope the Allies have heard of this too.
