The Need for a Sino-American Entente

The Spy-plane crisis
- An Opportunity for Indian foreign policy to contribute towards a Sino-American Entente

_________________________________________________________________________

In the context of the now resolved Sino-US stand-off on the spy-plane crisis and the generally chilly Sino-US relations, India should try to do its bit to defuse the tension in Sino-US Relations. Relations between these two countries (the Peoples Republic of China and the USA) have been at an edge since the inadvertent and unfortunate US bombardment of the Chinese Embassy in Belgrade, during the NATO action against Serbia.

In unfortunate events like the spy-plane crisis, many Indians would be tempted to score a point over China, by advocating close Indo-US leverage against China.

But this would in our opinion, be a grave error for both countries - that is for India and the USA. This can only bring China closer to Pakistan and align it indirectly with the forces of theology-inspired terrorism. In the interests of winning the ultimate battle against the forces of theology-inspired terrorism, this should not happen.

THE FUTURE CONFLICT

We would do well to bear in mind that the future conflict is not between USA and China, or between USA and Russia or between India and China.

The future conflict is only between the forces of theology-inspired terrorism and the West (or rather with the Rest). Hence it would serve the long term interests of the USA, China, India and in fact of the rest of the civilized world that the crises, like Sino-American spy plane dispute, are resolved and no such subsidiary conflicts are allowed to mar the very necessary global unity against the forces of theology-inspired terrorism. Thus India can do well to use this opportunity to bring about an understanding between itself, the USA and China.

All nations have to realize that the USA is the most powerful nation in the world today and hence is going to play a central role in the oncoming battle against the forces of theology-inspired terrorism.

No opportunity should be lost to bring about the general entente between civilized nations. In this effort the COLD War past has to be forgotten. Even pariah nations like Cuba and North Korea have to be prevailed upon to see sense and not play into the hands of the theology-inspired elements. Cuba and North Korea (and China to an extent) still have an ideological animus against the USA and the rest of the non-communist world. But today irrespective of ideological predilections of a free-economy or a centrally-administered economy, the real challenge to human progress comes from the forces of theology-inspired terrorism. And it is against these forces that the entire civilized world has to unite.

The spy-plane crisis has been resolved thankfully; and it very essential that it does not start another legacy of bitterness between the USA and the Peoples Republic of China. The world cannot afford these subsidiary conflicts in the face of the impending challenge of theology-inspired terrorism to global human civilization.

In this context every country of the civilized world should become a strategic partner of each other and not a strategic competitor! It is high time that we Indians worked towards this general global entente. Helping in bringing the Chinese and Americans to realize that they face a common adversary in the form of theology-inspired terrorism is a necessity to move in this direction.
